HoopAxis ("we", "the app") is an iOS application that analyzes basketball shooting form using your device's camera. This policy describes what data the app handles and how.
Summary
All shooting analysis happens on your device, and nothing leaves it unless you explicitly choose to send it. Your video, body landmarks, heart rate, and session results stay on your device by default. There is no advertising and no cross-app tracking. HoopAxis works fully without an account.
Only two things can ever leave your device, and both are off until you turn them on:
- Optional anonymous usage analytics — off by default (see below).
- Community leaderboards — an optional, separately joined feature that requires signing in. If you join and publish a result, it shares a pseudonymous handle and a single recomputed score. It never publishes your video, photos, body landmarks, heart rate, shot rows, or real name.
Data the app handles
| Data | Where it lives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Camera video frames | In memory on your device, discarded after processing | Real-time pose, ball, and shot analysis |
| Session recordings (video only, no audio) and shot photos | On your device, in the app's storage. Saved by default — turn off in Settings → Camera & Video → Save Footage | So you can replay and review your shots |
| Imported videos | Temporary local copy, deleted after analysis | Same as above, for the Review feature |
| Player profile (name, optional photo) | On your device, in the app's local database | So you can have multiple players and track progress |
| Shooting sessions, shot results, form metrics | On your device, in the app's local database | Stats and progress tracking |
| App preferences (e.g., voice pack, mute state) | On your device, in the app's settings | To remember your settings between launches |
| Heart rate and active energy (Apple Watch only) | On your device, in the app's local database | To show effort during a session and next to each shot — see the section below |
Everything in the table above stays on your device.
Heart rate and workout data (Apple Watch)
This section applies only if you use HoopAxis on an Apple Watch and turn on heart-rate tracking. If you do not, HoopAxis never asks for and never receives any health data.
- What we read. Heart rate and active energy, and only while a workout you explicitly started in HoopAxis is running. We read nothing else from Health, and nothing at all outside that workout.
- What we write. With heart-rate tracking on, the workout itself is saved to the Health app so it appears in your activity history, the same as any other workout. Nothing else is written to Health.
- Where it stays. On your device. Heart-rate samples are stored only in HoopAxis's local database. They are not included in cloud sync, are not stored in iCloud, are never visible to a coach or a team, and are never sent to us or to any third party.
- What we use it for. Showing your effort during a session, and — for Pro — showing the heart rate recorded closest to each shot so you can see how your shooting compares when you are fresh versus when you are winded.
- What we never use it for. Health data is never used for advertising, is never sold or shared, and is never included in the optional anonymous analytics described below.
- Deleting it. Deleting a session deletes its heart-rate data with it, and deleting your account or the app removes all of it. Workouts saved to the Health app are yours and are removed from the Health app itself.
You can turn heart-rate tracking off at any time in HoopAxis's settings, or revoke HoopAxis's Health access entirely in iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices.
Optional anonymous analytics
If — and only if — you turn on "Share anonymous usage data" (asked during setup and available anytime in Settings → Privacy; off by default), the app sends anonymous usage events to help us improve HoopAxis. This:
- Includes which features you use (e.g., a drill was completed, a screen was opened) tagged with a random, anonymous identifier that is not your name and not tied to your identity, plus the app version.
- Never includes your video, photos, body landmarks, name, or any personal information, and never your precise or coarse location (geolocation lookup is disabled).
- Is processed by PostHog acting as our analytics provider. It is not used for advertising, not used to track you across other apps, and not sold or shared with data brokers.
You can turn this off at any time in Settings → Privacy; turning it off stops any further data from leaving your device.
What we do not do
- We do not upload your video, photos, body landmarks, heart rate, or shot-by-shot data to any server.
- We do not use advertising identifiers or cross-app tracking technologies.
- We do not sell, share, or rent your data.
- We do not require an account or sign-in to record, analyze, or review your shooting. An account is needed only if you choose to join Community.
Permissions the app requests
- Camera — required to analyze your shooting form in real time.
- Microphone — for hands-free voice commands during training and for shot-sound analysis. Audio is processed on your device and is not recorded or uploaded.
- Speech Recognition — to understand those voice commands.
- Photo Library (read-only, when you import a video) — required only when you choose to analyze a previously recorded clip.
- Local Network — only for two-camera capture and other nearby-device features you start yourself. It connects your own devices to each other, not to us.
- Health (Apple Watch only) — heart rate and active energy during a workout you start. See the section above.
You may revoke any of these at any time in iOS Settings → HoopAxis, and Health access in iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices.
Children's privacy
HoopAxis is appropriate for users aged 4 and up, and its shooting analysis collects no personal data at any age. The optional anonymous analytics above are off by default, contain no personal information, and are not used to track anyone — so the app collects no personal information from children under COPPA or similar regulations. We recommend a parent or guardian make the analytics choice for younger players.
Two features are age-restricted. Community is available only from age 13, and players aged 13–17 additionally need a verified guardian's consent before anything is published. Heart-rate tracking requires an Apple Watch and the wearer's own Health permission; that data stays on the device and is never published or shared.
Deleting your data
App data is stored locally. To delete it:
- Inside the app: delete individual players, sessions, or shots from their respective screens. Deleting a session also deletes its recording, shot photos, and any heart-rate data recorded with it.
- To remove all local data at once: uninstall HoopAxis from your device.
- If you created an account for Community: delete the account from the app's account settings. This removes your published results and your account record.
- Workouts HoopAxis saved to the Health app belong to you and are deleted from the Health app itself.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date at the top will be revised. Material changes will be noted in the app's release notes on the App Store.
